Beast - Synopsis:

The film "Beast" tells the story of Moll, a young woman living on the isolated island of Jersey. She feels trapped in her mundane life and yearns for something more exciting. One day, she meets Pascal, a mysterious and alluring stranger, who turns her world upside down.

As Moll becomes increasingly infatuated with Pascal, she discovers that he is a suspect in a series of brutal murders. She must decide whether to believe in his innocence or turn him in to the authorities.

The film, directed by Michael Pearce, premiered at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival and received widespread critical acclaim. It was nominated for several awards, including the BAFTA for Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director, or Producer.

One of the central themes of "Beast" is the struggle for identity and self-discovery. Moll is a complex and multi-faceted character, who is searching for her place in the world. She feels trapped by her small-town existence and longs for something more. This longing is echoed in the film's setting, the remote and sparsely populated island of Jersey, which serves as a metaphor for Moll's own isolation and disconnection.

Another prominent theme in the film is the blurred lines between good and evil. Pascal is a charismatic and enigmatic figure, but also a suspected killer. The audience is left to question whether he is truly a monster, or if there is more to him than meets the eye. This moral ambiguity is reflected in the film's use of imagery and symbolism, such as the recurring motif of the titular "beast," which serves as a representation of the darker aspects of human nature.

The film's visual style is characterized by its use of natural lighting and muted color palette. The cinematography, by Benjamin Kracun, is breathtaking and evocative, capturing the rugged beauty of the Jersey landscape. The film's use of handheld camera work adds a sense of immediacy and intimacy to the story, drawing the audience into Moll's world.

The film's lead actress, Jessie Buckley, delivers a powerful and nuanced performance as Moll. She perfectly captures the character's inner turmoil and longing for something more. Johnny Flynn, who plays Pascal, is equally impressive, imbuing the character with a magnetic charm and complexity. The chemistry between Buckley and Flynn is palpable and adds depth to the story's central romance.

"Beast" is a gripping and thought-provoking film that explores themes of identity, morality, and the blurred lines between good and evil. The film's setting, cinematography, and performances are all outstanding and contribute to its overall impact. The film is a must-watch for fans of psychological thrillers and independent cinema.
